The Salesforce Tower, the tallest building in San Francisco, has a giant screen on the top of it and it plays videos whenever it's dark out.
In the Summer of 2023, I learned that they were having a call for proposals to show your art at the top of the tower.
Holy Moly! What an opportunity.
I saw the proposal on a Friday. It was due on Monday. Randomly, I didn't have much planned for the weekend (aside from childcare duties 😬), and I had recently learned about Remotion, a React renderer for video content!
The proposal called for: "A paragraph description of what we might want to create" and "5-10" portfolio pieces. The aspect ratio of the videos should be 1024x280 pixels, a kind of weird ratio.
Well, I don't really have a deep portfolio, but I did know what I wanted to create and I knew I could prove that I could make it if need be. So, I decided that submitted a description of the vision and 5-10 test videos might be sufficient.
I spent the weekend rendering up a whole bunch of 3D Crabs, and sure enough, by Monday morning, I'd sent in my proposal.
Ultimately, it was rejected, but I'm proud of my work.
Addendum:
- I learned about the event from the awesome AV Club / SF community. I recommend checking them out.
- I subsequently learned about this amazing salesforce tower simulator that I really wish I knew about in advance.
